The word “tipo” comes from the Latin word “typus,” which is derived from the Greek word “τύπος,” meaning “sign” as well as “character,” “shape,” and “model/prototype.” Today, with these meanings in mind, the term “tipo” is still used in the field of numismatics (the study of coins), referring to the image that is engraved and imprinted on them.
